Meet your postpartum doula
Laura Johnson, RN, BSN
I am a parent and an RN who has been honored to care for newborns, birthing persons, and children for over two decades. I’ve provided postpartum doula services for family & friends, informally, for many years. During my nursing career, you’d often find me staying after clinic visits or at hospital discharge, checking in on new parents in an attempt to provide a loving, safe space for them to share their experiences and challenges. Yet, in our current medical system, it felt like there was never enough time to truly support them in all of the ways they deserved. So, in 2025, I decided to make the switch to full-time postpartum doula work and completed DONA International’s Postpartum Doula training.
The care that I provide is rooted in dignity, respect, safety, and agency for all parents, with a focus on improving access to equitable, culturally informed care for LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Neurodiverse, Immigrant, refugee, and NICU parents. I’ve witnessed many families return home after the birth or adoption of their baby (s) with full arms and full hearts - yet so often without the ongoing support needed to feel held and protected during the tender days that follow. Heart-centered and respectful care is central to my approach.
I personally had a postpartum period that included mental health & sleep struggles, and many chestfeeding challenges, so I deeply appreciate the importance of having a safe space with lots of loving support to transition into your new identity as a parent. I prioritize mental health in my care by providing open conversations, gentle support, and trusted resources for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs).
With an extensive background caring for medically complex infants, children, and socially vulnerable populations, I am passionate about providing trauma-informed and healing-centered engaged care. The NICU journey—both during the hospital stay and after coming home—presents unique challenges. I partner with NICU families to ease these hurdles, giving you the time and space to care for yourself while you care for your baby. As the parent of a non-binary child, I work to center the postpartum journeys of the LGBTQIA+ community in a place grounded in love, safety & respect.
In my spare time, you’ll find me cuddling on the couch with my kiddo & partner, laughing at episodes of “Bob’s Burgers” or “The Golden Girls” (I’m a Jersey girl born and raised, so I’m also always in search of east coast style pizza and a good bagel to nosh), enjoying all things ocean/beach, expanding my summer hibiscus collection, getting caught up in a good book, sharing a meal with people I love, connecting with people in my community or cuddling my dogs (or any other animal in the vicinity).
